Toowoomba prepares to ring in the Year of the Dragon - While preparations for Lunar New Year festivities in Asia reach fever pitch, a team of volunteers in southern Queensland are preparing for Toowoomba's Chinese New Year celebrations on February 4.
Daphne Fung is part of TIMS, the Toowoomba International Multicultural Society, and is getting ready to see in the Year of the Dragon.
"The Dragon itself is a very symbolic, very mystical animal," Daphne explains. "We came out of the Year of the Rabbit, which is a very nice, timid, slowly paced, peaceful little rabbit to the other extreme, the beginning of the cycle of the Dragon, which is the most powerful and intelligent, a strong year."
Daphne says Chinese New Year in Australia is very different from her childhood memories.
"I was born in Hong Kong, and my whole family migrated to Australia in about 1967, to north Queensland.
