Pentax Ricoh Imaging Expands Mirrorless Lineup With K-01

Pentax Ricoh Imaging Expands Mirrorless Lineup With K-01 - Pentax Ricoh Imaging has announced its second mirrorless Pentax-branded camera, the K-01. Unlike the company's previous entry into the category, the small-sensor Pentax Q, the K-01 features an APS-C image sensor, the same size found in consumer D-SLRs. The camera features a design by Mark Newson, a renowned designer who has had his work displayed at The Museum of Modern Art. His autograph logo will adorn the bottom of the camera.

Even though the camera features a mirrorless design, it retains a size that is similar to that of a compact D-SLR, as the engineers behind the camera have decided to use the standard K bayonet mount that Pentax has employed since 1975. This requires the distance between the lens mount and the image sensor to be identical to that of a camera with a mirror box. The upside is that all existing K-mount lenses will mount on the camera and focus to infinity, but it does prevent the camera from achieving the svelte form factor of the Olympus E-PM1 or Sony Alpha NEX-5N.
